WHAT IS THE GROWTH MINDSET?

‘’A growth mindset is when students understand that their abilities can be developed.’’

-Dweck 2014

Over time, from a young age, our students develop opinions about how they learn and their learning capabilities. From the time they begin school, students begin to build perceptions surrounding what they are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at. These assumptions start to affect the level of learning they engage in daily.

As teachers, we are encouraging our students to actively learn on a daily basis but what if you are met with ‘I can’t do it!’ or ‘I’m not good at that!’? It can be disheartening to see our students have such little faith in their abilities when we can see so much potential in them.

The classroom is a place where students are continually growing. This is where the growth mindset comes into play. Encouraging this idea amongst our students from a young age helps to move away from the misconception that students have around not being able to learn certain things. Through promoting this, you will help your students learn how to learn, be resilient and in turn to be confident while doing so.
